The DET wins on time, cost, and convenience. IELTS and TOEFL still have wider institutional acceptance. If your target program accepts both, the DET is usually the faster, cheaper path. We verify acceptance before you register.

Ask on WhatsApp
  • 1How much does the DET cost?

The DET currently costs $65 USD. As members of the Duolingo Global Partner Network, we can sometimes offer partner pricing or available discount codes. Contact us before registering to check current availability.

  • 2How many times can I retake the test?

You can take the DET up to three times within any 30-day period. After that, you must wait until your 30-day window resets. Scores from each attempt remain available, you choose which to send to institutions.

  • 3How long is my DET score valid?

DET scores are valid for two years from the test date. If you plan to apply across multiple academic cycles, factor that into your timing. We help you plan when to sit the test based on your target intakes.

  • 4What equipment and setup do I need to take the test at home?

You need a quiet room, a computer with a front-facing camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a government-issued ID. Phones and tablets are not supported. The room must be alone, no other people, no notes, no second monitor. We brief every client on the full checklist before test day.

  • 5Is the DET accepted for Canadian universities and student visas?

Most Canadian universities accept the DET, and IRCC has accepted DET scores for certain study permit pathways. Acceptance varies by institution and immigration stream, we verify acceptance for your specific target before you register.

  • 6Can I prepare in Arabic or French?

The test itself is in English. Preparation materials can be explained in French or Arabic, we adapt our prep briefings to your strongest non-English language. The goal is that you understand the format, the scoring, and the strategy, not that you memorize vocabulary in English alone.

  • 7What happens if my test is rejected or my score is very low?

If your test is invalidated due to a rule violation, Duolingo does not issue a refund, and that attempt counts toward your 30-day limit. If your score is simply lower than your target, you can retake within the window. We coach clients on test-day rules and strategy specifically to avoid invalidation.
